I received a letter from Mt. Sinai today that they are going to do a study about strokes and TIAs. Since I had a TIA in 2007, they want me to participate. The study just requires me to take a blood test and attend six different 1 1/2 hour seminars about strokes. Sounds pretty simple, and they are going to pay for my time. Not much, it will probably cover my gas and parking.
The funny thing about this is that the surgeon that fixed the hole in my heart (the TIA resulted in a barrage of tests that led to the discovery of a hole in my heart and later heart failure: see my story) has always doubted that I had a TIA, although every other doctor believes that I did have one. And now his hospital wants me to take part in a study on strokes and TIAs.
I think I will participate in the study. I want to do it in hopes that what ever little bit I can do will help other people in some way. It was a scary thing having a TIA. At least there was no permanent damage other than I do get some tingling in the arm and fingers sometimes.
I’m not sure what they are really doing, but if it helps them learn more about strokes and TIAs, then more power to them. I’ll write an update about it as it happens.
