When I was nine years old, there was a song on the radio by the Stylistics that was pretty popular. Back in 1971 there was no Google to look up the lyrics of a song, so pretty much you went with what you heard, and I wondered why such an offensive song was a hit.

I had not heard the song in many, many years, and I heard it on the radio the other day and had a good laugh at myself. I looked on my car's radio and saw that the actual title to the song is “Betcha by Golly Wow”. As a boy I thought they were singing “Getcha own Gollywog”!

Now I know. Thought it was weird back then to sing about a Gollywog. Even in 1971 they were offensive.
