Yes, I know, I am a major advocate for the wearing of masks in public but yesterday I actually had to refuse a mask at my doctor’s office.
I went to the radiology department of my doctor’s group to have a sniff test done and the office exercised all the precautionary protocols for COVID-19, with temperature checks as patients came in, everybody was kept very far apart, staff wore gowns, gloves, face shields, etc.
Since this was my first time actually being out in public amongst other other people since March 3rd, I was nervous but felt somewhat safe enough.
A sniff test is done to check the functionality of the diaphragm and in order to do it you stand on a large X-ray machine and the doctor takes live continuous X-rays of your lungs while you do a series of deep breaths and quick sniffs to see how the diaphragm functions.
I had on my new O2 Canada face mask and the doctor and technician felt that the test would not be accurate with that masks and asked me to wear a regular surgical mask instead.
The technician held out the brand new surgical mask he just pulled out of a box and handed it to me.
“No, thank you” I said as the technician looked at me is dismay, the look in his eyes saying that he feared he was about to deal with a ‘Karen’ situation.
“But you can’t do the test through that mask” he said defensively.
“I understand, but I prefer to use my own mask if you don’t mind” I said, reaching into my pants pocket and pulling out an individually wrapped surgical mask which my wife told me to take just in case.
“But I have a perfectly good mask here for you to use so you don’t have to waste yours” he said bemused.
“I hear you, but unfortunately that mask is not good. You have your hand touching the spot where my nose and mouth will be and in the time that I have been here you have been in and out of this room, touching the door handles, machines, everything with that same exact pair of gloves. You haven’t changed them since I have been here and that mask is now contaminated.”
So, what is the moral of this story folks? A) Always listen to your wife. B) Always observe your surroundings. C) Always have back up masks in your pocket. D) Just wear a freaking mask!
